Depression

A mental illness well known, but not fully understood. Ironic, considering how many times it is misdiagnosed. Now, as a writer, the only way I know how to explain such a concept is creatively.

Imagine yourself in a sink hole, unable to escape. At first, you try to claw your way out towards the light; only to realize the effort is in vain. The evidence lies in your bleeding fingers and claw marks in the sand. Slowly, the darkness swallows your whole being; giving yourself over to its embrace. Hours pass as your need for food, drink, socializing.. anything fades away. All you will do is stare blankly into the abyss, questioning why you should even exist. There is no finding a way out. If you are lucky, a friend will throw a line down to raise you out of the hole. Whether you accept that offer is a different story. They will have to fight for you to find the hope to crawl to them; pull you back from the abyss. Otherwise you are at the mercy of the Earth, if you have the right herbs. These may just snap you out of it or the wrong amount will make things worse.

Be mindful of your fellow humans if you see such suffering, you could be the line that helps them out of the hole.

Life

Life is interesting I will give you that my friends. When one is young everyone wants to be something exciting; police officer, fire fighter, doctor, chef, etc. Then one gets to middle school and starts to learn more rigidly about subjects. Some start to think about computer opportunities like a programmer. Others find that they like the arts such as music or drama club. Moving onto high school gives that last bit of exposure to all subjects for students to sample. Languages, history through the ages, writing, performing arts, cooking, science, wood shop, physical education, health, and sometimes more sometimes less given where one went to high school. Yes, I understand that most schedules were set by the credits needed, but one got a taste of their freedom to choose. Not to mention the clubs that arose in these years as one tries each to see what one likes. In this four short years, one decides where they will go to college, if they will go to college, and what do they want to become as an adult. The ones that go to college become even more exposed to other topics that many of them change majors half way through their journey. Fantastic, they may have found their true calling.

The others, who could not or did not want to go to college, made their way by working their butts off to afford their living expenses. These people forge their path a different way by trying to become such jobs as pilots, managers, plumbers, etc. Now, in both instances, we are encouraged since the time we start school to find a career that suits us; finding a job that we can work for the rest of our lives… Does anyone else find that ironic? Think about it for a second. From the moment, we start to form intelligence; we have to think what our future job is… not the stuff that really matters. Love, family, friends, and enjoying life should be the primary focus of our existence on this world. Instead, we are bent into focusing on our sustainability. There are people I know, who are paid much more than me, who do not have their own apartment, never gone on a trip, gripe about their lack of pay, move from job to job, and are entitled beyond belief.

Do you want to know why that is? It is because since day one they were so focused on their goal that they let it consume them. They never thought of the crippling debt that will make sure they will never own a home. Never thought of those hours studying/working that kept them away from friends and loved ones. Never thought that letting the stress and work consume them would push others away. Never learned basic skills needed to thrive in life such as money management. Never learned humility and basic human kindness in order to make connections to further their growth…

Does that not seem wrong to you? Life is meant to be spent enjoying love, adventure, friendship, and comfort; not working until one becomes dust. It is the reason why many play video games, watch TV/movies, and read books. They want to escape to a place that brings them a jolt of excitement to their dull lives or lifts them with hope that some day it could be just like that; surrounded by loved onesĀ  and experiencing life together. Do not let life pass you by for a job. Stop and remember to hug your kids, tell your wife/husband that they mean everything to you, check up on your buddies to see if they are alright, visit your grandparent’s in the nursing homes, sit down and play games with your loved ones, help a stranger who can’t afford their coffee, be kind to those who are making you food/fixing your car/ etc., plan a trip with those you hold dear, save up for that home, and most the important one of all… make memories. Love is something we should all strive for in this life; don’t let yourself be cutoff from its glow.
