Work Story Time: The Umpire and the Bat

Way back when I was young, one of my first jobs was as an umpire. A great little job to ease me into the working world… sort of. Anyways, I came to one of the games as usual and met with the other two umpires. One of them was a friend of mine and the other I worked with before. Both these guys were doing this job longer than me. Remember that cause it’ll be important later. So, in most situations the most senior of the umpires is supposed to go behind home plate. However, neither of them wanted to do it. I, who wants to get the job done, volunteered for the duty.

I’d say we were halfway through the game. Dust in the air, people cheering, and a general sense of enjoyment by all. Nobody showed ill will towards anyone, but enjoyed the game as they should. Keep in mind these were little kids playing. One came stumbling over to the plate. I was minorly concerned the kid would hit himself as he tried to take practice swings! The coach came over to steady and reteach him. A nod of assurance led the batter to the plate. I readied myself to watch as the pitcher wound up. The ball came down the plate and WHAM!

My helmet vibrated and eyes went blurry for a moment. I steadied my legs as I tried not to fall forward on the catcher. An audible “Ooo” of sympathy rolled through the crowd… only broken by my word calling “Time!” The back of my head was throbbing for the batter had hit me in the back of the head. I walked off the field trying to steady myself. I stumbled a bit while groaning and growling from the pain. Rubbing the back of my head, I made sure there was no blood. A parade of people came to check on me. First was the two coaches who patted me on the back for taking the hit. The head of the umpire association (My boss) was the next to show up. Seeming a bit more worried than the rest and offered to give me free food for the rest of the week. Finally, my fellow umpires came to check on me. Knowing I was fine at this point, they were giggling to themselves. I asked them what was so funny? They responded that both of them didn’t want the home plate duty for they were worried about getting hit by the ball… but now they were afraid of bats!

No Sleep

Round and round the clock turns
All the while your eye burns.
Seeing things that aren’t there
Why should you care?
After all you can’t change it
So why think even a little bit?
Give in to the insanity
Forget about humanity.
Dwell on your worry
Let it fill you with fury.
Build it up and up
But yet peace will stop.
The mind racing
Stop the spacing.
Relax and give in
This is the way to win.
Recover yourself and you shall see
The simply way to victory.

Depths of Depression

Down, down I go
To the cold I know…
Sinking faster below the surface
Wishing I knew a service…
All I see is misery and woe
It’s what one sees down below…
The glimmer of lights fading
No hope for wading…
It ends in darkness
Seeing the light less…
You’ll never claw yourself out
Just sink and mope about!
Forget what makes life worth living
And embrace the end of forgiving!
Yet there may still reside a voice
Giving us a glimmer of choice.
Hold your breath and you’ll get through
After all you know it’s true!
Use the tools to ask for help
Before you start eating the kelp!
From my side I pull the pouch
A handful of items which don’t slouch,
Helpful for some days
But not for today,
Yet there was one among the rest
A glass bottle to write to the best.
With pen in hand I scribble away
Hoping the ink will stay!
A last bit of effort I release
My final act please get it! Please!
Fading away I almost didn’t find
The lifeline I thought a trick of my mind!
Two hands wrap tightly on the rope
As I was rewarding for my belief in hope!
She pulls me on deck with a hug and kiss
Telling me how much she loves me and would miss!
The happiness we found together
And how we could storm any weather!
Slowly, happiness returns
To the point it burns.
Yet I feel the icy depths call
And I know again I’ll fall…
So, keep her close and near
Or you’ll lose it all I fear…

Whirlwind of Worry (Poem)

They started as whispers in my ears…
Something I’ve dealt with for years.
The doctors delay,
Stacking bills to pay,
The body creaks
For answers we seek,
The house now stands
Costing many a grand.
How will I pay?
It says day after day.
Oh, how it howls,
As the collector scowls
There’s little strength in these bones.
Feeling like they were beaten with stones.
Nothing you can do to fix it.
Only watch as you fall behind bit by bit.
Failure at everything you do.
Surprised anyone would stay near you.
After all, your friends are gone.
They needed to move on.
You’re nothing special, just a joke.
Given the opportunity you’d choke.
It all started as a whisper…
And now the words are crisper.
You think it’ll change?
That you’ go beyond the range?
How sad. The world is cruel.
If you don’t know that, you’re a fool.
To cling to hope and a dream,
Will only rip you by the seam.
Stronger and stronger it whips about…
I cannot stay strong and stout.
Of course, you can’t…
Just go ahead and rant.
Your words fall flat on the ground…
I know exactly where you’re bound.
Alone and under a bridge you’ll be
Crying, “How did this happen to me?”
But I can answer that simply for you…
Believing in the phrase anything I can do-
Cease and desist this prattling on!
If I can give in my life would be gone…
So, fly away far from here.
Don’t want to feel you near!
And even as they fly away,
The whispers will return the next day.
