A Closer Look: Bello Cap

Here sat the royal goblin castle where the decisions of the entirety of Conflictus were decided. At one time it had five towers of teal standing tall. Now all but one had fallen; most of which had slid down the hillside and into the town, crushing several other buildings. It once had keeps that were stationed on each corner of the walled fortress. At a set of bronze doors, the only standing barbican towered over them with a cannon situated on the top. Inside the walls was a dome with a bronze top.

This place has resisted attack after attack, but the town was finally overwhelmed in the final confrontation of the Tech War. Lone Star and his forces from their nearby island swarmed the shores with the intent to reach and ransack Mendaxum. However, they found stiff resistance from the mixed forces of Conflictus and an elite team of heroes that came to assist them. Through staggering odds, they were able to repel the invaders, but not without cost. The town was scarred and the citizens felt no inspiration to repair it. Their leaders had failed them, trusting that Mendaxum would actually come to their aide. It was then that the goblin monarchy was toppled and the many races of Conflictus grew apart.

As for the state of the town in the current town, the houses and shops were made of brown stones for the walls and the houses had teal slated roofs. The buildings still had burns, singes, and smashed in every conceivable way of damage. Most of the shops had since been closed with the old local market nearby. The stands had been tipped over and the fruit had fallen on the ground, rotting with flies pouring out of them. The town sat in front of the beach that opened into a bay which had several small wooden docks built on it. Its sand was surprisingly well kept other than the few bits of scrap metal and wood, the damage caused from the same battle that hit the rest of the town. A far-off cliff exhibited more of the past scars with the rocks broken off, leaving columns of white rock standing in front of a cove under the castle. On the main drag one finds a rundown building that notably had sword slashes, bullet holes, scorch marks, and blood stains upon its walls. On top of the place was a sign that said, “Ol’ Bera”.

For now that is all I can say about this capital town. Anymore would reveal too much of the story. Hoping you like to read more.

About the Author: Quest for Qualifying Queries

Hello again my friends. My apologies for the recent thread of no posts this week. This is entirely my fault since I have been focusing on sending as many query letters as I can manage between shifts at work. Now for those of you who do not know what a query letter is, I shall explain. Basically, it is a cover letter that is specifically addressed to a literary agent. To explain further, in this short one page letter you are trying to prove/ show off why this agent should be interested in your book. It is important that they feel a connection to your story to invigorate them to really sell your tale. Now, how does one capture and retain the attention of one of these individuals? See I have no idea. My personality lends itself to not really be the boastful type, making this sort of thing not up my alley.

In my personal view, one must test the merit of a writer by his work. Most agents, I feel, would agree with this statement, but that would mean the poor individuals would be reading at least five hundred books a month. I don’t even think I could reach fifty books in a month if I had nothing else to stop me. To help them manage this massive task, they limit the amount they first have to read to the first three chapters of said books or the first ten pages. Fair enough, one needs to get a feel whether or not one will connect to the story from the very beginning. For the most part, I sincerely feel like this system does truly work for most novels. However, I do not think this works for those of us that write in the way of worldbuilding. Not only in the first three chapters do we have to introduce the characters that one will fall in love with, but a world in which one will get lost in its wonder. This leads me to also notice a trend among agents. One will find, at least from what I have seen, not many that represent fantasy or science fiction; both of which usually involve a fair bit of worldbuilding. Makes one wonder how to find that one agent that will be your partner to success.

Finding an agent is a daunting task and a journey that every writer must take; knowing that the quest, unlike our own tales, is not in our hands. We have to learn to trust someone else to judge in a quick glance whether or not to represent us; being ready to take several rejections for not being quite the right fit. But fear not my friends, most of these agents are very kind. From the rejections I have personally gotten, they encourage me to keep trying and can definitely see that my story will be published. Words of encouragement that I think every writer would be elated to hear. So give it your all as you continue to chase your dream. To all those agents that look letter after letter, I say to you thank you. The entirety of your job is to give us the opportunity to live out our dream, share our tales, slide in some lessons, and connect with people when sometimes we find to be hermits. Without some of you, the stories we grew up with and inspired by would not exist. Continue doing what you do and hopefully I will be a partner with one of you very soon.

Never stop trying to achieve your dream, for why wish them in the first place?

Item Inquiry: Amulet of Tawala

A small golden medallion of a cat’s face with elongated ears, its eyes glows green when it uses its powers. This object allows the wearer to control anyone who looks at it directly, among some other abilities still yet to be discovered. It was recovered after the fall of the Pharaoh Tandaa and given to the Racconto to store. The mad man attempted to control all Hadithi following the Wizard’s War. He was stopped by an alliance formed between the genies, the people of the region of Uchawi, and some rogue sorcerers from Mendaxum. They decided it was best to leave the former rulers body with his people in the region of Kunyoosha, but the medallion they needed to be sent as far away as possible.

Item Inquiry: Node Portal System

In the land of Mendaxum, a common form of traveling for sorcerers is the Node Portal System. What is this you ask? A simple design and concept, it starts with the node. A node is a circular pad with veins of magic that stem from a center gem. These are usually placed inside homes, business, and common public places. The pad resonates to a specific node stone designated by the user. The said stone is a small rock with incantations written upon it. In the center is a glowing gem that resonates to a host node. When one wants to get to the specific pad, they only have to think about their destination and use one finger to rub around the center gem in a circle. As they do this, they must touch each of the incantations written upon the stone or it will not work. A clever tool to cut down the commute time in the busy land of Mendaxum.

A Closer Look: The Pass of Discidium

Over the rolling waves one faces many dangers upon the ocean known as Moana, but one of the most devious is found not within it. Between the high cliffs of Fabulum, Spiegel, and Graecia there lies a curse that strikes seafarers. This magic was place by sorcerers in Graecia in order to protect their land from a Northern invasion. The spell itself causes groups to turn on one another by using their raw emotions to bubble over. Why can this be bad? Even if the individual is mad at another for just stubbing their toe earlier, the curse can cause them to be so mad to the point of murder. An invasion force would cut themselves down without the Graecian people having to lift a sword. Terrifying to say the least, but there is one way to avoid this fate. If the group relays all their frustrations to one another before entering the pass, they will be free from the spell’s effect. However, this fact is not widely known by all leaving most travelers to perish at sea in this forsaken pass.
